Getting started
The first conversation and the support available.
Where do I start?
Start with a consultation or complete the intake form that fits your situation. Your lawyer can then consider the information, discuss your options and explain the support available. If you are unsure which service to choose, call (613) 519-4518 or email info@hcls.law.
Can we meet remotely?
Yes. Meetings are virtual by default, so you can connect from a place that works for you. In-person meetings at our Ottawa or Toronto office can be arranged in advance. Contact us to confirm the location and availability. We do not accommodate walk-ins.
Are consultations free?
Initial legal consultations are a paid service, from $250 plus HST, credited if you retain the lawyer. The conversation is an opportunity to receive advice about your circumstances and next steps. Administrative help completing an intake form is a separate courtesy service and does not include legal advice.
Do HCLS Members accept Legal Aid certificates?
HCLS Members accept Legal Aid Ontario certificates for qualifying family law and child protection matters. Submit your certificate through our Legal Aid intake so a lawyer can review your matter and the scope of your certificate.
Can I get help with just one part of my case?
Yes. You can seek help with a defined task, document review or legal coaching while continuing to manage your matter yourself. Full representation is also available. Your lawyer will discuss and agree on the scope of work with you.
Does submitting an intake form mean I have hired a lawyer?
No. Submitting an intake form does not create a solicitor-client relationship and is not legal advice. It helps a lawyer understand your situation before a consultation and assess whether they can assist, including any conflict, practice-area or jurisdiction considerations.
Fees & retainers
Understanding how the work is arranged and paid for.
What does a retainer cover?
A retainer is an advance deposit held in trust toward future legal services and expenses. Work is billed against the deposit at the agreed rate, with statements showing the work performed. Further funds may be required as the matter progresses. A retainer is not the total price of your case.
What are the typical initial retainers?
The standard range is $1,000–$2,000 for general legal services and $2,500–$3,500 for full legal representation. Your lawyer will confirm the appropriate amount based on the work and complexity involved. Retainers may need to be replenished during the matter.
Why do some prices say “from”?
The work required varies with the facts, documents and complexity of the matter. Starting prices provide a reference point. Your lawyer will explain the scope, pricing basis and any estimate that can be given. HST and applicable disbursements are additional.
Can I pay online?
Existing clients can pay a bill or deposit funds into trust through the appropriate secure Clio payment link. E-transfers can also be sent to admin@hcls.law. If you are unsure which option applies, contact the office before paying.

How quickly will I hear back?
HCLS endeavours to respond within two business days of receiving correspondence. If your matter has an approaching court date or deadline, include that information when you contact us.
How can I access my documents or contact my lawyer?
Contact your lawyer directly to request documents, arrange document sharing, or ask about your matter. If you need help reaching your lawyer, contact the HCLS office.
